Long — Steam description, verbatim

Hell Is Neon Colored

A full-featured action RPG with deep progression and customization that strips away every unnecessary feature to reveal a neon-colored, high-speed arcade experience that builds with your skill and progress.

Craft your arsenal

Weapons and abilities are made of 3 interlocking parts that change everything about their use and gameplay.

You start with the system that powers the weapon, from cyclic iteration and ammo-based systems, to weapons that only fire on the beat of the music.

From there you combine complex weapon parts and abilities. Mix a beam weapon with a sprint powerup, leech health with enemy seeking rockets, enter stealth and crush your enemies unseen, or fire poisonous mortars over walls.

More than 300 combinations of weapons and abilities carefully balanced for customizable play await.

Difficulty that matches your drive

One hundred carefully tuned levels of difficulty await you.

With enemies that mirror your abilities, grow stronger and smarter, and gain powers like healing, summoning, stealth and complex ranged attacks that pull from the same arsenal you do.

Bosses that grow more larger and more complex as the game progresses also escape their boss level constraints and make their way into Endless Mode and Gauntlet Mode.

More than 120 brutal combinations of enemy powers build to make a a challenge that you control.

Choose your difficulty. Want to grind and power up to roll through your enemies, that's possible. Want to push the cutting edge and finish all 100 difficulties with the highest possible challenge? The game meets you there.

Sounds like Retro - only better

Ten chiptune tracks and ninety-nine effects run through one emulated eight voice sound chip.

The pace of the game and the danger level reacts through the soundtrack, pace and drive increasing as risk does.

A full featured EQ and sound studio in-game to play with and cut your own soundtrack options.

Customization that respects you

Full control remapping - every action can be remapped across keyboards, mouse, and gamepads

Full controller support - play it on your favorite controller or Steam Deck

Deep video customizations - Tune and tweak every video option and setting

Complex audio tuning - not just volume sliders, a full EQ for your tuning purposes

Full auto-target - give your right thumb a break and let the game handle targeting

Full and smart auto-fire - target and destroy what matter and cycle firing smartly

Audio

The soundtrack is not a set of files. It is a synthesizer and a sequencer that run while you play, on a deliberately constrained emulated sound chip: 32 kHz, sixteen-bit stereo, exactly eight voices, one global echo. Ten tracks and ninety-nine sound effects share those eight voices, which is why a dense firefight audibly thins the music out — the effects take the melody's voices, exactly as they would have on the hardware this is modelled on.

Every track's loudness was measured rather than chosen: all ten sit within 0.05 LU of each other under ITU-R BS.1770 K-weighting, so switching track is never a jump in volume. What is deliberately not flattened is each track's own rise from calm to panic — the score getting louder as the player gets hurt is the feature.

The Audio Studio is a streaming feature. It hands the whole score to the player: pick a track, drive the tempo, stack a second layer locked to the first's step clock, drag a ten-band EQ, watch a spectrum analyser, and record to a .wav file that opens in any editor. Creators can make their own channel music out of it on stream and take it away with them.

About the developer

Low Revolution is Aaron, who goes by Revoincubus — a solo developer working in Ireland.

“I'm a full-time cybersecurity consultant, and Hell is Neon Colored is one of my passion projects. My approach to design comes out of Hemingway's approach to writing: cut everything to its core elements, and leave nothing in that isn't doing work. I'm pretty obsessed with doing that without ever sacrificing fun or visual joy — a game cut to the bone should still be a delight to look at and instantly readable at a glance. That is why this one is five colours, no art assets at all, and a soundtrack that writes itself while you play.”

Technical notes

The current Windows build uses Haxe and Heaps. Its chiptune music and sound effects are synthesized live by an emulated sound chip.
